No Time to Waste

<div>Dear Secretary of StateI am writing to you following the recent remarks made by Baroness Louise Casey in relation to dementia.I am a supporter of Alzheimer’s Research UK because I believe more needs to be done by the UK Government to tackle the enormous harm and heartbreak caused by dementia. That’s why I supported the charity’s Dementia Unseen campaign last year to make an early and accurate diagnosis a right for everyone living with dementia. I was pleased to see Baroness Casey acknowledge the need for better diagnosis in her remarks last week.I support dementia research because it's changing the future. Advances in science have meant exciting developments in both diagnosis and treatment and I want people in the UK to be able to benefit from them. Research has brought forward new treatments to slow the progress of Alzheimer's for those in the very early stages of the disease. I know these treatments are not cures but as Baroness Casey highlighted it is bitterly disappointing to see these not made available on the NHS. This situation has to change and I am proud to support Alzheimer’s Research UK and Baroness Casey’s call for investment in dementia research and clinical trials.You said you would respond to Baroness Casey in April to lay out how your department plans to invest in clinical trials. I am calling on you today to keep good on that promise and set out a clear plan for how you will meet the commitment you made in the Labour manifesto for the UK to be a world leader in clinical trials in dementia. I also want to see action taken to improve dementia diagnosis in your wider plans. Dementia is the biggest killer in the UK, and we need ambitious action from the UK Government. I look forward to seeing your announcement that you will fund and deliver world-leading dementia clinical trials in the coming weeks.</div>
