Dear Prime Minister,
As part of your first 100 days in office, I’m asking you to back Alzheimer’s Research UK’s campaign for just 1% and commit to substantially increasing funding for dementia research to bring about effective treatments urgently.
As the new leader of the Conservative party and our new Prime Minister, I know your first 100 days in power will be crucial in making your vision for the UK a reality. Please use this time to strengthen the UK’s commitment to bringing about a life-changing treatment for dementia, so we can end the public health crisis this condition is having on our health and social care systems and the devastation it is causing millions of people across the country.
There is currently no way to prevent, cure or even slow down the diseases that cause dementia. But we know from other diseases such as cancer and HIV that sustained investment in research can make breakthroughs possible and change lives. There is no reason this shouldn’t be the same for dementia.
Alzheimer’s Research UK is calling on the government to commit just 1% of the annual cost of dementia towards research. At present, the government puts just 0.3% towards finding treatments. It is only with increasing funding that researchers will be able to capitalise on the progress already made and close in on their goal of treating and preventing Alzheimer’s and related dementias by 2025.
Could you please share your views on the need for more investment in dementia research? Will dementia research be a priority for you as Prime Minster?
